I love everything about the holidays! Listening to Christmas music while decorating the tree with my family, finding that one random PERFECT gift for someone, walking around the streets with hot chocolate looking at Christmas lights with extended family, watching the kids wake up Christmas morning to see what Santa left for them...so many amazing memories in the making!

Maria, thank you so much for sharing your talents with us. That is gift enough. As for Christmas Eve traditions, our family is starting a new one this year: we'll purchase ice-cream gift certificates, and after all of our own Christmas Eve festivities, we'll visit the fire station and give the gift certificates to the fire men who can't be at home with their families on Christmas Eve. Can't wait. Thank you again for all of your inspiration. We've missed you, and it's so good to have you back.

On Christmas Eve, because the elves have so much work to do ( wink), I lay out newspaper for a tablecloth... load it up with crab, shrimp, artichokes and crusty french bread... candles and wine also, of course...When everyone is done eating, everything gets rolled up into the newspaper! Even though my children are grown and now have their own children, the tradition continues!

One of my favorite Christmas traditions to do as a family is sit together after dinner on Christmas Eve with all the lights in the house turned out, and then one by one we take turns talking about each member of our family and what we love so much about them. We light a candle for each person as we go, and soon the room is glowing with warm candlelight and happy thoughts.

My favorite tradition is going to midnight mass at my church. It was built using all local materials in the mid nineteenth century in the style of a German "cathedral." (There are real tree trunks inside the two-story stone columns, including one from my great-grandparents' farm, on which my grandfather and mother then grew up.) With the enormous stained glass windows, the antique pipe organ, the choir, the candlelight, the incense...It is war m, grand, familiar and part of my family's history. jjjahn3941@gmail.com

In the past couple of years, now that our kids have all grown up, we do a Secret Santa Swap with a twist. Each secret santa wraps the gift, but then writes a poem to the recipient with clues about their true identity. If the recipient guesses their clue on the first go, they win a prize (and they get to open their gift : ) So much fun!

Merry Christmas from Northern California! I must say that one of my most treasured traditions that I have done since I was a teen ager, is to hand write all of my Christmas Cards. I write a personal note in every card that is specific to the person who will be receiving the card. Yes it is time consuming but in this age of everything emailed, texted, facebook messages, I still enjoy handwriting these notes. I start my Christmas Card writing on Thanksgiving week end with the goal of being able to send out all cards no later than December tenth. I send out 50 cards per year and love it!

Such simple decorating, but so beautiful.

My favorite tradition is baking my mothers recipe for Snowballs. She made those cookies, along with marshmallow fudge every year when I was a kid. I can still see the large pan of fudge cooling on the counter, and mounds of those round powdered sugared cookies on a plate. :)

It isn't Christmas for me until those cookies are sitting on my own counter. My mother passed away when I was a teenager, so keeping this particular tradition alive helps me feel like she's still a part of my life. :)

favorite christmas "activity".... a house filled with the laughter of my three boys and their friends. As of right now it looks to be a quiet year instead as our eldest two will not be able to come home. My favorite tradition is my son arrives home from college, we stop at the same Starbucks to pick up the same drink, arrive home to the dogs that are always surprised he has returned yet again, the same tree sparkles, the same stockings hang, my son looks around and states" this is the best Christmas ever."
